About

What is the Junior Livestock Sale?
Each year over 100 of Routt County's youth participate in the 4-H Livestock Program raising market animals for the County Fair. What they experience in the 4-H program adds to their lifetime of knowledge, entrepreneurship, responsibility and leadership which makes our community stronger. Your support of the sale benefits the young person whose animal you purchased in many ways, such as scholarships, college savings, future 4-H projects, and so much more .

How do I know what order the sale is happening in?
The sale catalog will be available after the judging is completed at the Routt County Fair. You can find the program on our website the night before the sale.

I don't need a whole animal, how else can I support the 4-H member?
You can also support a youth with an add-on to the purchase price of the animal. By doing an add-on, you are not making a purchase, but are instead making a contribution that can go to a youth you specify or to a specific species. this can be done in advance here or at the sale auction desk during the sale.

Another way to support youth would be to raise the floor, which allows you to raise the purchase price of any species to a set amount, so all kids will earn at least that much despite their auction price.

More information regarding add-ons and raising the floor can be found here.

How do youth benefit from my purchase?
The Junior Livestock Program provides an opportunity for 4-H and FFA youth to raise and sell a market beef, lamb, hog, goat, rabbits or birds at the Routt County Junior Livestock Auction. Youth use the proceeds of the sale as they see fit. Most continuing members, after covering expenses from the previous year, reinvest their profits into the next year's projects. Because of this, members learn how to be financially responsible and to critically think about their investments. Members who are in their last year in 4-H use funds for future enterprises, for example helping to fund college or a vocational program. Your support doesn't go unnoticed. 4-H families value the businesses who continuously show their support of the 4-H program.
The sale is Saturday August 16, 2025 starting promptly at 4:30. The free pre-sale BBQ will run from 3 to 5pm
at the Routt County Fairgrounds in Hayden, Colorado in the Multipurpose Building!

FAQ.

Am I responsible for taking the animal home?
After the sale, your animal will be sent to the processor and you will pick it up from them when it is packaged and ready. We have contracted with Mountain Meat Packing, AGP Processing, and Fitch Ranch Artisan Meat Co. to process all our sale animals. At the sale you can specify how you want your meat cut or you can call your processor within two business days.
You will then have a freezer full of delicious, locally raised meat for you to enjoy all year!

Cut sheets for specifying meat cuts can be found here.
What if you don’t want the meat, but you still want to support the 4-H kids?
That’s GREAT! If you are the successful bidder at check out you can choose to donate the meat to a local charity.
Buyers are still responsible for paying for processing. If you are planning to donate your meat, please let us know so we can send you to the correct processor!
Suggested charities:  Lift-Up, Horizons, Casey's Pond, The Haven, etc...
What if you don’t need that much meat?
  1. It's easy to find friends or a business that would like to share an animal with you. Each of you can get a portion of the wrapped meat.
  2. Donate a portion of the wrapped meat to a local charity.
  3. Give a portion of the wrapped meat to your employees as a bonus.
Show the community that you support Routt County 4-H!
The auction gives you, as an individual or business, the opportunity to promote your services while supporting local youth. The Routt County Junior Livestock Sale is a 501c3 non-profit, so part of the animal purchase price may be tax deductible. Consult your tax advisor!
